Why a phone in the cornfield? The Old Order Amish tend to restrict telephone use, as it is viewed by some as interfering with separation from the world. By bringing the outside world into the home, it is an intrusion into the privacy and sanctity of the family, and interferes with social community by eliminating face-to-face communication. Amish of Lancaster County use the telephone primarily for outgoing calls, with the added restriction that the telephone not be inside the house.
This phone can be seen today from Rt.30 in Lancaster, PA.

Very thought provoking in view of the fact that this operating phone booth lies in the middle of Amish country in Lancaster, PA. These people have the greatest work ethic and take tremendous pride in their properties. We were fortunate enough on this trip to find the original Landis land deeded from William Penn, The original deed was written and signed by Penn on pig skin!

Mary Beth, Wherever did you FIND this? hehe.. Seriously I never thought I would say that a "Telephone Booth" was an antique! Did you? Great find! I love your work! Thanks for coming by my gallery too! I guess they have more of these phone booths in Amish Country? Voted and FAv'd
Mary Beth Landis replied:
Kym, I sure was surprised (and felt very old) when I saw this. I did see one other phone in the middle of nowhere in Lancaster and it was an entire phone booth with the folding door (if you can believe it). I had to get in it to see if it worked....heard a real dial tone! Should have called someone :) Thanks for the v/f Mary Beth
